In Episode 3 of Glengarry Votes, hosts Jena Doonan and Kelli Campeau explain who represents residents at the municipal level and one of the important differences between the political structures of North Glengarry and South Glengarry.
While neighbouring communities can sometimes be only a short distance apart, municipal boundaries determine where residents vote and who represents them.
The episode explores the difference between ward and at-large representation. North Glengarry uses a combination of the two systems, with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and one Councillor elected at large, while Councillors also represent the wards of Lochiel, Kenyon, Alexandria and Maxville. In South Glengarry, all five members of Council are elected at large and represent the municipality as a whole.
Jena and Kelli also explain the connection between local municipal elections and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, where the Mayor and Deputy Mayor represent their respective municipalities at Counties Council.
The discussion also examines Strong Mayor Powers, why they apply to North Glengarry but not South Glengarry, and the role municipal committees and boards play in bringing Council, staff and members of the public into the decision-making process.
