In Episode 2 of Glengarry Votes, hosts Jena Doonan and Kelli Campeau take a closer look at the level of government that is often closest to our everyday lives: municipal government.
Roads and sidewalks, drinking water and wastewater, garbage and recycling, snow removal, parks, recreation and fire protection are just some of the services residents interact with regularly.
But what does Council actually do?
This episode explains the important distinction between Council and municipal staff. Council establishes the municipality’s direction, sets community priorities, adopts bylaws and policies, approves budgets and major infrastructure investments, establishes service levels, and makes decisions surrounding planning and future development. Municipal staff are responsible for carrying out that direction and managing day-to-day operations.
Jena and Kelli also explain how residents can bring issues and concerns before Council through the delegation process and why municipal budgeting requires elected officials to continually balance community needs, infrastructure investment and responsible financial management.
When residents cast their ballots on October 26, they are choosing the people who will make these decisions on behalf of their community for the next four years.
