North Glengarry Council Advances Community Infrastructure, Waste Diversion, and Municipal Asset Planning at September 28 Meeting
The Township of North Glengarry’s September 28, 2026 council meeting focused on community infrastructure, municipal land management, road maintenance, waste diversion, and community awareness. Council advanced several projects while continuing to emphasize responsible spending, efficient service delivery, and long-term management of municipal assets.
Surplus Municipal Lands Identified in Maxville
Council declared portions of unopened road allowances along King Street South and Robertson Drive in Maxville as surplus to municipal needs, allowing the township to consider their potential future disposition.
The decision reflects an ongoing review of municipal land holdings, particularly in areas where existing development and encroachment agreements have limited their practical use as future roadways.
Dunvegan Community Hall Floor Replacement Moves Forward
Council awarded the Dunvegan Community Hall floor replacement contract to Dauner Construction for $264,581.63 plus HST, moving forward with repairs following the discovery of significant deterioration beneath the existing floor.
The project includes a $20,000 contingency to address potential unknown conditions uncovered during demolition. Provisions also allow work to be reassessed if unexpected structural issues are discovered, providing additional financial protection as the project progresses.
Multi-Year Stone Dust Contract Supports Road Maintenance
Council awarded a multi-year contract valued at approximately $109,800 to Al Blair Construction for the supply of stone dust used in maintaining the township’s gravel road network.
Securing a reliable supply will help Public Works respond to changing road and seasonal conditions while supporting ongoing preventative maintenance throughout North Glengarry.
Household Hazardous Waste Depot Proving Successful
Council received a positive update on North Glengarry’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot, which now provides residents with regular Friday access rather than relying solely on traditional one-day collection events.
The approach has received strong community response while helping reduce operating costs and providing residents with a more convenient way to safely dispose of hazardous household materials.
Expanded Waste Services and Regional Partnerships Considered
Staff discussed opportunities to improve depot operations, including adding student staffing to extend service hours and eliminate midday closures.
Council also discussed potential partnerships with North Stormont and South Glengarry that could allow residents from neighbouring municipalities to access the facility through cost-sharing arrangements, subject to environmental approvals and operational requirements.
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month Proclaimed
Council proclaimed October 2026 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in North Glengarry, recognizing families affected by pregnancy and infant loss and encouraging greater community awareness, compassion, and support.
Municipal Lease Agreement Renewed
Council approved Bylaw 52-2026, extending an existing lease agreement with 5010425 Ontario Inc. for municipally owned property in Alexandria.
Overall Takeaway
The September 28 meeting highlighted North Glengarry’s continued focus on maintaining community infrastructure, improving environmental services, and responsibly managing municipal assets. From the significant Dunvegan Community Hall rehabilitation to the growing success of the Household Hazardous Waste Depot, council continued to balance immediate community needs with long-term financial and operational planning.
