Council Advances Water Infrastructure, Community Recognition, and Environmental Action at June 23 North Glengarry Meeting

The Township of North Glengarry’s June 23, 2025 council meeting addressed a wide scope of issues, ranging from infrastructure and facility upgrades to event planning and environmental compliance. The evening’s agenda underscored the township’s commitment to both long-term asset management and active community engagement.

Major Water Infrastructure Grant Application Approved

Council approved a $2 million grant application for the Gary River Integrated Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Resilience Project. The initiative targets the maintenance and upgrading of existing municipal water systems, with a focus on dam safety, flood risk mitigation, and source water protection. The project aligns with provincial funding streams aimed at preserving existing infrastructure over expanding for growth, reflecting a shift toward sustainable, preventative governance.

Evening of Excellence Rebranded to Showcase Broader Community Contributions

North Glengarry’s signature recognition event is getting a refresh. Council approved the rebranding and expansion of the Evening of Excellence, which will now include new award categories such as Leader Under 40 and Champion of Culture and Heritage. The event will also feature presentations on township development and progress, increasing transparency while strengthening community pride and participation.

Facility Upgrades Enhance Sustainability and Emergency Preparedness

Funding was allocated to install a natural gas generator and tankless water heaters at the Glengarry Sports Palace. These upgrades respond to both energy efficiency goals and emergency service continuity needs. Despite added costs due to gas utility delays, council reaffirmed its support for long-term investments in accessible, modernized public infrastructure.

Infrastructure Contracts Awarded for Water System Maintenance

Council awarded contracts for sewer lining and municipal drain abandonment following competitive bids. These projects are designed to reduce infiltration into wastewater systems and streamline maintenance responsibilities. The awarded contractors were selected based on strong references, scope clarity, and pricing. A separate contract was also approved for rail crossing grade upgrades, addressing safety issues and fulfilling asset management commitments.

Lagoon Cleanout Approved to Meet Environmental Compliance

A full cleanout of the Alexandria Lagoon was approved, addressing sludge accumulation and ammonia toxicity issues. The project includes sonar surveying and the use of geo tubes for dewatering, with dredged material to be repurposed as landfill cover—offering both regulatory compliance and cost efficiency. The project prepares the site for future construction while protecting local ecosystems and public health.

Road Allowance Sale Streamlines Property Use

Council approved the closure and sale of a road allowance intersecting an active airstrip, transferring the land to adjacent property owners. The move resolves a longstanding land use conflict and supports agricultural development, with no financial impact on the township. This decision simplifies property boundaries and reflects North Glengarry’s practical approach to rural land management.

Council Prepares for Community Events and Civic Celebrations

The meeting concluded with updates on upcoming Canada Day events across the township and a review of local recreational programming. Council emphasized the importance of maintaining strong community connections through public celebrations, and scheduled its next session accordingly.
