South Glengarry Council Advances Fire Service Modernization, Housing Growth, and Economic Development at May 25 Meeting

The Township of South Glengarry’s May 25, 2026 council meeting focused on planning approvals, fire service modernization, inter-municipal cooperation, and economic development initiatives. The agenda reflected Council’s continued commitment to balancing growth, operational efficiency, and responsible land-use planning.

Agricultural Zoning Amendment Supports Rural Land Management

Council held a public meeting regarding a zoning bylaw amendment for a property at 21765 Concession 7, Lancaster. The amendment reduced the minimum lot size for retained agricultural lands while prohibiting future residential construction, ensuring compliance with severance conditions and provincial planning policies.

No public objections were received, and the amendment supports continued agricultural use while maintaining the integrity of surrounding farmland

.

Fire Service Technology Upgrade Approved

Council approved the transfer of $7,500 from the modernization reserve to purchase mobile tablets for fire service vehicles. The tablets will allow firefighters to access and record information in real time, improving operational efficiency and integrating directly with existing records management systems.

The initiative follows successful implementation of similar technology by other emergency service organizations and represents a continued modernization of municipal operations.

.

Automatic Aid Agreement with North Glengarry Rescinded

Council voted to rescind a 2014 automatic aid agreement with the Township of North Glengarry after reviewing several years of response data. The analysis found that automatic aid was rarely required for major incidents and was used primarily for medical calls and false alarms.

Council emphasized that a broader mutual aid agreement remains in place, ensuring assistance between municipalities continues when requested while allowing resources to be deployed more efficiently.

Housing Intensification Approved in Green Valley

Council approved a zoning amendment in Green Valley to formally recognize an existing duplex and permit the future construction of a semi-detached dwelling. The amendment reduces minimum frontage and lot area requirements while supporting diversified housing options within an existing serviced settlement area.

The decision aligns with provincial policies encouraging residential intensification and efficient use of municipal infrastructure.

Indoor Firing Range Proposal Receives Zoning Approval

Council approved a zoning amendment for a 27.7-acre property in Lancaster to permit a recreational commercial establishment featuring an indoor firing range along with accessory retail, training, and canteen facilities.

The proposal underwent extensive technical review, including studies on noise mitigation, traffic, environmental impacts, and site design. Public feedback was mixed, with concerns focused on noise, safety, traffic, and property values, while supporters cited economic benefits and recreational opportunities. Council noted that future site plan control measures will provide additional oversight during implementation

.

Committee Updates Highlight Regional Projects and Community Initiatives

Council received updates from various committees and partner organizations, including county road resurfacing projects, heritage designation matters, landfill evaluations, and local archives fundraising activities.

These reports highlighted ongoing regional collaboration and continued investment in community services and infrastructure

.

Closed Session and Staff Recognition

Council entered a closed session to receive legal advice and negotiation instructions before returning to open session without public reporting.

The meeting concluded with recognition of departing township staff member Jamie Frip, whose leadership and contributions over the past two years were acknowledged by Council and staff

.

Overall Takeaway

The May 25 meeting showcased South Glengarry’s focus on modernizing municipal services, supporting housing and economic development, and making data-driven operational decisions. Through strategic planning approvals, technology investments, and continued collaboration with regional partners, Council demonstrated a balanced approach to growth, efficiency, and long-term community development.
