North Glengarry Council Focuses on Community Infrastructure, Emergency Services, and Rural Advocacy at May 25 Meeting

The Township of North Glengarry’s May 25, 2026 council meeting addressed community facility improvements, recreation infrastructure, emergency service partnerships, agricultural engagement, and municipal advocacy. The agenda reflected council’s continued focus on maintaining community assets, strengthening regional collaboration, and supporting long-term rural sustainability.

Island Park Improvements Enhance Safety and Accessibility

Council approved improvements at Island Park and Fireman’s Island, including the removal of aging storage sheds and a deteriorating gazebo, reconnection of boardwalk sections, and consolidation of equipment storage into existing municipal facilities. The project aims to improve safety, aesthetics, and operational efficiency while reducing maintenance requirements.

Ice Arena Operations Prepare for the 2026 Season

Council approved the 2026 ice installation schedule for both municipal arenas, with the Glengarry Sports Palace scheduled to open on September 12 and the Maxville Sports Complex on September 26. The dates were established following consultation with user groups to ensure facilities are available when demand is highest.

Sports Palace Dehumidifier Replacement Approved

Council awarded a contract to Simcoe Refrigeration for the replacement of the aging dehumidifier system at the Glengarry Sports Palace. The investment is part of the township’s ongoing asset management strategy and will help maintain facility performance, energy efficiency, and user comfort.

Fire Department Partnership Strengthens Specialized Rescue Capacity

One of the meeting’s most significant discussions centered on a new automatic aid agreement between North Glengarry Fire Services and the City of Ottawa. The agreement provides access to Ottawa’s specialized technical rescue teams and equipment for complex incidents such as confined space rescues, trench rescues, rope rescues, and grain bin emergencies.

Operating on a fee-for-service basis with no annual cost, the partnership allows the township to access highly specialized resources when required without the substantial expense of maintaining those capabilities locally

Regional Fire Leadership Expanded

Council approved the appointment of Fire Chief Matthew Roy as Deputy Fire Coordinator for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. The appointment strengthens North Glengarry’s role in regional emergency planning, mutual aid coordination, and large-scale incident management while ensuring local perspectives remain represented at the county level.

Agricultural Advisory Committee Receives Support

Council endorsed the creation of a county-wide Rural Agricultural Advisory Committee. The proposed committee is intended to strengthen communication between municipalities and agricultural stakeholders while improving consultation on rural issues such as roadside tree planting, infrastructure planning, and agricultural operations.

Council Calls for Property Tax Assessment Reform

Council supported a resolution from the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus urging the Province of Ontario to resume regular property reassessments. Municipal leaders noted that assessment values have remained frozen since 2016, creating inequities in taxation and challenges for long-term municipal planning. The resolution calls for a stable and predictable reassessment cycle that reflects current market conditions.

Public Questions and Meeting Conclusion

Public questions focused primarily on the new emergency services agreement with Ottawa and the role of the Deputy Fire Coordinator position. Council provided clarification on the scope of specialized rescue coverage and the benefits of regional collaboration.

Overall Takeaway

The May 25 meeting highlighted North Glengarry’s commitment to maintaining community infrastructure, enhancing public safety through strategic partnerships, supporting rural and agricultural interests, and advocating for fair provincial policies. Council’s decisions reflected a practical approach to service delivery, fiscal responsibility, and regional cooperation while continuing to invest in the long-term needs of residents.
