North Glengarry Council Addresses Telecommunications Concerns, Infrastructure Procurement, and Community Recognition at April 13 Meeting

The Township of North Glengarry’s April 13, 2026 council meeting addressed community recognition, telecommunications infrastructure, zoning updates, and municipal procurement, reflecting council’s ongoing focus on balancing growth, service delivery, and resident concerns.

Community Living Month Proclaimed

Council proclaimed May as Community Living Month, recognizing the contributions of Community Living Glengarry and promoting awareness and inclusion for individuals with developmental challenges. The proclamation highlights the township’s commitment to community engagement and social inclusion.

Telecommunications Tower Proposal Deferred

Council reviewed a proposal for a 40-metre telecommunications tower in Alexandria, raising concerns about report accuracy, proximity to residences, and potential health implications. Given the township’s limited authority over federally regulated projects, council deferred issuing a concurrence letter to seek additional information and risk clarification.

Zoning Amendments Support Housing Flexibility

Several zoning bylaw amendments were approved to permit secondary dwellings and manage surplus dwelling rezonings, supporting increased housing options while maintaining alignment with provincial planning policies and protecting agricultural land use.

Road Maintenance and Procurement Decisions

Council awarded the 2026 gravel road resurfacing contract under budget, demonstrating effective cost management and prioritization of infrastructure needs. At the same time, the liquid dust suppressant tender exceeded expectations, prompting discussion on alternative materials and future procurement strategies.

Equipment Investment Strengthens Public Works Capacity

Council approved the purchase of a new tandem plow truck and associated equipment, supporting winter operations and long-term fleet renewal planning.

Regional Advocacy on High-Speed Rail

Council passed a resolution opposing the Alto high-speed rail project in its current form, citing concerns related to insufficient consultation, rural impacts, and lack of integration with existing rail services. The motion reinforces the township’s commitment to protecting rural connectivity and advocating for local interests.

Public Engagement and Meeting Close

Public questions focused on the telecommunications tower proposal, reflecting strong community interest and engagement. Council concluded the meeting with procedural confirmations and adjournment.

Overall Takeaway

The April 13 meeting highlighted North Glengarry’s focus on responsible infrastructure planning, community inclusion, and proactive advocacy, while demonstrating a measured approach to emerging challenges such as telecommunications development and procurement pressures.
